Selection Guide
Cable Gland Selection Guide — IP Rating, Thread & Material
Complete cable gland selection guide: IP ratings, thread types (metric/PG/NPT), clamping ranges, material selection, and installation best practices.
Overview
Cable glands must match the cable diameter, enclosure knockout thread, environmental IP rating, and application-specific requirements (ATEX, EMC, temperature). This guide provides a systematic selection process.
Selection Process
Determine Cable Diameter
Measure the outer cable diameter. The gland clamping range must cover your cable. Allow 1-2mm margin on each side of the range.
Identify Enclosure Thread
Metric (M12-M63): global standard. PG (PG7-PG48): legacy German. NPT (3/8-2): North American. Match the gland thread to your enclosure knockout.
Select IP Rating
IP65: indoor with occasional washdown. IP66/IP67: outdoor rain and temporary immersion. IP68: continuous submersion (specify depth/pressure). IP69K: high-pressure hot water washdown.
Choose Material
Nylon PA66: standard industrial, indoor/outdoor, -40C to +100C. Nickel-plated brass: hazardous area (ATEX), marine, -60C to +200C. 316 stainless steel: offshore, chemical, -60C to +400C.
Special Requirements
EMC gland: for shielded cables requiring 360-degree screen contact. ATEX/IECEx: for hazardous area Zones 1/2. Multi-hole: for multiple cables through one knockout.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure cable diameter for gland selection?
Measure the outer diameter with calipers at 3 points along the cable. Use the largest measurement. Select a gland where your cable falls within the clamping range — ideally in the middle third for best sealing.
What is the difference between IP68 (5 bar) and IP68 (10 bar)?
IP68 does not have a fixed depth/time specification — the manufacturer declares the test conditions. Our nylon glands are tested to 5 bar (50m water column) for 30 minutes. Brass and SS glands to 10 bar. Always check the specific test conditions for your application depth.
