Wire Connector Selection Guide — Push-in, Lever, Screw Terminal
Complete wire connector selection guide: push-in vs lever vs screw terminal. Wire range, current rating, application recommendations for electrical installations.
Overview
Wire connectors must match wire type (solid/stranded/flexible), wire gauge, current rating, and installation environment. This guide compares connector types and provides selection criteria.
Selection Process
Identify Wire Type & Gauge
Solid wire: push-in or screw. Stranded: push-in (rated) or lever. Flexible/fine-stranded: lever only (or screw with ferrule). Gauge: 24-12 AWG for most connectors, up to 4 AWG for screw terminals.
Determine Current Rating
Lighting circuits: 10-16A (20A connector minimum). Power outlets: 16-20A (32A lever connector). Motor/appliance: check nameplate, apply 1.25x factor.
Choose Connector Type
Push-in: fastest installation, solid wire. Lever: all wire types, higher current (32A), reusable. Screw terminal: highest current (>32A), all wire types, visual inspection.
Check Standards
UL 486A/B for North America. IEC 60947-7-1 for international. VDE 0606 for Europe. Match certification to your market.
Consider Environmental Factors
Temperature rating (-40C to +105C typical). Vibration: spring clamp (push-in/lever) superior to screw. Chemical exposure: check housing material.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix solid and stranded wire in one connector?
Push-in: generally not recommended. Lever connectors: yes, each port is independent. Screw terminals: yes, both wires under same screw (check terminal rating). Always verify the connector is rated for mixed wire types.
Do I need ferrules for stranded wire in push-in connectors?
Standard push-in connectors accept solid wire directly. For stranded wire in push-in connectors, some models accept it directly while others require ferrules. Lever connectors accept stranded and flexible wire without ferrules. Always follow manufacturer instructions.
