Crimping Tool Selection Guide — Wire Terminals & Connectors
Crimping tool selection guide for wire terminals, ferrules, and connectors. Ratchet vs manual, die types, calibration, and quality verification.
Overview
Proper crimping is essential for reliable electrical connections. This guide covers crimping tool types, die selection, and quality verification for professional wire termination.
Selection Process
Identify Terminal Type
Insulated terminals (red/blue/yellow): dedicated crimp profile with insulation support. Non-insulated: different die profile. Ferrules: square or hexagonal crimp. Coaxial/RF: specialized die sets.
Select Tool Type
Manual pliers: low volume, field work. Ratchet crimper: ensures full crimp cycle, consistent quality (recommended). Pneumatic: high volume production. Hydraulic: large gauge terminals (>10mm2).
Verify Crimp Quality
Pull test: terminal must withstand specified pull force. Visual inspection: check for proper bell mouth, conductor brush, and insulation crimp. Cross-section analysis for critical applications.
