The short answer is no — not all black cable ties are UV resistant. While black is the default color for outdoor-grade ties, the presence of black pigment alone does not guarantee UV protection. The difference comes down to the type and concentration of the pigment used, the base polymer, and whether the tie was actually formulated for outdoor use.

Why Black Ties Are Assumed to Be UV Resistant

There is a reason for the common assumption. Carbon black — the pigment that makes cable ties black — is also an effective UV stabilizer. When properly compounded into nylon at the right concentration (2–2.5% by weight), carbon black blocks ultraviolet radiation from penetrating the polymer, preventing the chain scission that causes embrittlement.

However, not every black cable tie contains carbon black, and not every tie that contains carbon black has enough of it to provide meaningful UV protection.

How to Tell If a Black Tie Is UV Resistant

You cannot reliably determine UV resistance by looking at a tie. The following methods will help:

Check the Product Specification

The most reliable method. Reputable manufacturers explicitly state whether a cable tie is UV stabilized or weather resistant. Look for phrases like “UV stabilized,” “weather-resistant,” “outdoor grade,” or “UV tested to UL 62275.” If the datasheet does not mention UV resistance, assume it is not UV stabilized — even if the tie is black.

Look for UL Recognition

UL 62275 specifies a UV exposure test for outdoor-rated cable ties. A tie that carries UL recognition for outdoor use (UL listing category “ZIHH” for cable ties) has been tested and verified for UV resistance. If the tie only carries UL 94 flammability recognition, that does not indicate UV protection.

Check the Price

Genuine UV-stabilized black cable ties cost more than standard black ties. The carbon black masterbatch, UV testing, and UL listing all add cost. If you see a pack of 100 black ties sold at the same price as natural ones, they almost certainly contain minimal or no UV stabilizer.

The Flex Test (Informal)

This is not definitive, but can be a rough indicator: UV-stabilized nylon 6/6 ties tend to be slightly stiffer than non-stabilized ties of the same dimensions. However, this varies by manufacturer and is not a reliable standalone test.

When Black Is Not Enough

Even properly UV-stabilized black PA66 ties have limitations. In extreme environments, you may need more than black:

  • Coastal / marine environments — Black UV-stabilized PA66 may still fail within 18–24 months due to combined UV and salt fog degradation. Use 316 stainless steel ties instead.
  • High-temperature outdoor — Black PA66 is rated to 85°C. Above that, use ETFE (150°C) or stainless steel ties.
  • Desert / high-UV index regions — Standard UV-stabilized PA66 (3–5 year rating) may need upgrading to weather-resistant PA66 (5–8 year rating) or ETFE for longer service life.
  • Rooftop solar installations — Black UV-stabilized PA66 is the standard choice, but consider stainless steel for grounding and bond wires where 25+ year service life is expected.

These black ties are perfectly fine for indoor use. The problem arises when a user assumes black = UV resistant and installs them outdoors.

How to Buy UV-Resistant Cable Ties

When purchasing black cable ties for outdoor use, follow this checklist:

  1. Read the product description — Does it explicitly say “UV resistant,” “UV stabilized,” or “outdoor grade”?
  2. Check the datasheet — Look for UV test results, typically expressed as hours of UV exposure (e.g., 1,000 hours per UL 62275).
