How to Release a Cable Tie: Every Method Explained
Releasing a cable tie depends entirely on the type of locking mechanism. Releasable ties have a dedicated release tab. Standard ties require cutting. Stainless steel ties use ball-lock or worm-drive mechanisms. This guide covers all methods.
Method 1: Releasable Cable Ties — Press the Release Tab
Releasable ties (CT-R Series) are designed to be opened and reused. The locking head has a spring-loaded release tab.
- Find the tab — Look for a small raised tab on top of the locking head
- Press the tab — Use your thumb or a small flathead screwdriver to push the tab down. You will feel the internal pawl disengage from the serrations.
- Pull the strap backward — While holding the tab down, gently pull the tail of the strap in the reverse direction (away from the head)
- Release the tab — Once the tie is loose enough, release the tab. The pawl will re-engage with the strap.
- Reuse or store — The tie retains 90%+ of its rated strength for 50+ release cycles
Tip: Press the tab first, then pull the strap backward. Do not pull on the strap while pressing the tab — this can bend or break the release pawl.
Method 2: Standard Cable Ties — Cut to Release
Standard (one-piece) cable ties have no release mechanism. The only way to release them is to cut the strap.
- Use flush-cutters or diagonal cutters — Flush-cutters give the cleanest cut closest to the head
- Cut at the locking head — Insert one blade between the head and the strap, as close to the head as possible
- Cut through the strap — The tie will release immediately when cut
- Remove both pieces — Pull the strap out of the head. Discard both pieces.
Method 3: The Shim Trick (Emergency Release for Standard Ties)
If you do not have cutters, you may be able to release a standard tie using a thin shim:
- Find a thin, stiff piece of plastic or metal (feeler gauge, cut piece of plastic bottle, or thin screwdriver)
- Slide the shim between the locking pawl and the serrated strap inside the head
- While holding the shim in place, pull the strap backward
- The shim prevents the pawl from catching the serrations, allowing the strap to slide back
Warning: This method often damages the pawl. The tie will have significantly reduced holding strength if re-tightened. Only use in non-critical, temporary situations.
Method 4: Stainless Steel Ball-Lock Ties
Stainless steel ball-lock ties have a small ball bearing inside the head that locks against the band. To release:
- Insert the release tool (or a small flathead screwdriver) into the release slot on the head
- Push the ball bearing away from the band
- While holding the ball back, pull the band backward
- The tie can be reused multiple times
Method 5: Stainless Steel Worm-Drive Ties
Worm-drive stainless ties use a screw mechanism similar to a hose clamp:
- Use a flathead screwdriver to turn the screw counter-clockwise
- The band will loosen as the screw disengages from the slots
- Once loose, slide the band out of the head
- Fully reusable — simply tighten the screw to reuse

Safety Notes
- Wear eye protection when cutting ties — fragments can fly
- Cut away from your body and away from cables
- Collect all fragments — small plastic pieces are a contamination hazard
